本文力图透过"中世纪晚期人们宗教信仰的中心"圣徒崇拜这扇窗口，来分析一下中世纪晚期英格兰民众的宗教信仰，以期能够说明英格兰宗教改革是民众宗教信仰的"水到渠成"呢？还是杜菲所提出的"畸变"。
导论 概述论文写作目的，着重介绍英格兰宗教改革的研究状况，然后阐明自己的研究思路与研究依据。
第一章 介绍圣徒崇拜的历史渊源，分析圣徒崇拜在英格兰的兴起与发展。
第二章 圣徒崇拜的功能分析。圣徒崇拜具有"互惠"与"双向性"，其功能可以广泛地分为普遍的帮助、庇护与政治功能。民众具有自己的圣徒崇拜观念，并通过利用圣徒的名字、誓约、朝圣等方式求助于圣徒。
第三章 在中世纪晚期，英格兰的圣徒崇拜已经发生了变化。根据圣徒传的分析，我们可以看出当时圣徒崇拜非常盛行，且有了世俗化与民众化的倾向。同时在圣徒崇拜中出现了一些新的迹象。
第四章 中世纪晚期，英格兰民众们在圣徒崇拜中具有了自己的价值取向。它体现于"自我取向"与"现实取向"两个方面，为"个人主义"的产生提供了肥沃的土壤。
结束语 总结前面章节所述，作者认为中世纪晚期英格兰的民众宗教信仰已含有"个人主义"思想倾向，而正是"个人主义"孕育了"宗教个人主义"思想，从而推动了英格兰宗教民族主义的发展，使英格兰宗教改革的发生成为必然。

Abstract

From the cult of saint （'the center of medieval religion'）, this thesis tries to find out something about the popular religion in the late medieval England, so that we can see whether the Reformation happened naturally or un-naturally.
In the introduction, it outlines the purposes of writing, puts forward the way of researching of the thesis after introducing and summarizing the recent works about the English Reformation.
Chapter One introduces the history about the cult of saint, and then analyzes the rise and development of the cult of saint in England.
Chapter Two analyzes the function of the cult of saint. Receiving benefit from each other is the main character of the cult of saint. The cult of saint fulfills an extraordinary variety of functions. This may be broadly grouped under the headings of universal assistance, patronage, and political functions. The popular pray the saints for help by using the saints' names, making the promise, going pilgrimage, and so on.
Chapter Three Something new has happened in the cult of saint in the late medieval England. From the analysis of the life of saint, we can see the cult of saint has become popular and begun to face the laity. New phenomena also appear in the practice of the cult of saint.
Chapter Four The popular in England have had their own standpoints. They begin to take care of themselves, and 'the Individualism of Religion' develops from this.
In the end, it summaries the main content of the above parts, and stresses the appearance of 'the Individualism', then includes the viewpoint of this thesis.
